Thermal desorption is a two-in-one technique: sample collection/concentration and transfer to a detector. Dynatherm instruments capture compounds of interest on adsorbent material packed in glass cartridges, and then introduce the collected chemicals into a gas chromatograph, where the various components are separated, measured and identified. Thermal desorption uses heat instead of solvent extraction to release organic compounds, so there is no long extraction time and no solvent peak in the chromatogram. Two sorbent traps operate in series: the first high-capacity sorbent trap retains desired compounds from large sampling volumes; the second capillary-bore focusing trap injects the collected sample onto a capillary column in a narrow-band plug. Transferring the analytes to the focuser improves injection efficiency, since liters of flow may have been required during sampling to collect enough mass to meet the requirements of the detector. Water interference is minimized: carrier gas evaporates water vapor from the absorbent tube and vents it from the unit with no sample loss. And, Dynatherm instruments are made to facilitate remote sampling by battery-powered air sampler or direct source sampling with a mobile desorber/GC platform.

Typical Applications

  • evaluate long- and short-term chemical exposures
  • establish safe/unsafe perimeters for hazmat incidents, remediation sites and chemical weapons demilitarization
  • support occupational safety, industrial hygiene and environmental methods
  • assess air toxins/VOCs for ambient and indoor air quality
  • food, flavor and fragrance analysis
  • outgassing and product purity evaluations

ACEM 9300 Series

Building on the success of the 900 series ACEMs, the 9300 series offers multiple configurations of the basic thermal desorber to provide maximum flexibility. All versions include two tube chambers that accept 6 or 10 mm OD tubes. (8 mm tubes optional)

Tubes may work in series, such as when a sample is desorbed from the initial tube and focused on the trap.

Tubes may work in parallel, for constant sampling. While tube A is collecting, tube B is desorbing into a GC through a cold trap or internal focuser in the GC.

Keys to Performance

  • high sampling volume permits sub-ppt detection
  • sequential trapping allows transfer to any column at any flow rate
  • low artifact background within typical operating range
  • ambient focuser temperature eliminates external cooling or cryogenic devices
  • design eliminates water interference from high humidity sampling sites
  • rapid tube heating rate for clean release of analytes (C3 to C33)

Desorber Tubes & Traps

The design of the sorbent tubes for sample collection is a major factor contributing to overall performance. Dynatherm sorbent tubes are generally packed with various materials to capture a broad range of volatile and semi-volatile compounds. More volatile compounds break through initial layers but are trapped by succeeding layers. Still, the tubes desorb quickly and completely during the desorb cycle.

Standard tubes:

4.5 inches long, 6 mm OD, centerless ground Pyrex

Fast flow tubes:

4.5 inches long, 10 mm OD
(8 mm OD tubes optional)

Focusing traps:

6 mm OD and less than 1 mm ID, packed to match sorbent tube

Tube Conditioners

Dynatherm offers both a single-tube and a six-tube conditioner to restore tubes to their original purity. In the six-tube model, individual temperatures and flows can be set for each tube, and are sensor-controlled to 1°C. Heaters and fittings can be mixed and matched to accommodate tubes with different outer diameters and lengths, then can be conditioned simultaneously on the Model 9600 Six-Tube Conditioner.

The 9600 comes with a handheld controller, which stores up to 20 methods, and optional DCI software, letting the user program each tube chamber in 1°C increments and condition in 0.1 minute increments. Both models offer an injection port option that lets users spike tubes with an internal standard.
